The project originated in 2024 from the experience of Fabio Castagna, founder of the TracingITALIANroots© platform, and took shape in 2025 in Washington, D.C., with the launch of its pilot initiative. Presented at the Embassy of Italy, it was officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) as a Special Project.
For Fabio Castagna, the initiative brings to life a true vision: a living map of Italy’s heritage. Through its collaboration with Italea and the "Roots Tourism" program, the project seeks to preserve memory while encouraging people of Italian descent to reconnect with their ancestral hometowns. As Castagna himself explains, “Italy will reach Italians abroad through technology.” It is this vision that inspired the initiative’s international outreach.
The TracingITALIANroots© network, already established in New York, will continue its expansion to Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Detroit, and Boston, before extending its presence to Canada, South America, South Africa, and as far as Australia.
