Today we're taking you to Fifth Avenue, right in front of the iconic steps of the New York Public Library. Pause for a moment and look at the entrance, it's impossible not to meet the gaze of its famous guardians. They are two majestic stone lions, masterfully carved by the Piccirilli Brothers in their Bronx studio.
In 1911, they almost never came to life. Theodore Roosevelt suggested replacing them with American bison, while others proposed beavers as a tribute to the Astor family's fortune. In the end, the lions prevailed. They were originally named Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, until Mayor Fiorello La Guardia gave them the names we know and love today: Patience and Fortitude.

But what almost no one notices is that, standing beside them, are two more extraordinary Italian masterpieces.Guarding the entrance is not only stone, but also the metalwork of two monumental flagpoles, remarkable examples of pure Neoclassical design. They were created to complete the building's architectural vision with an elegance inspired by Europe's great artistic traditions, blending beauty with purpose. The artist behind these enduring symbols of strength was Italian architect and sculptor Raffaele Menconi, who arrived in the United States in 1900, bringing nothing but his extraordinary talent and determination.

Take a closer look and you'll discover mythological faces, graceful acanthus leaves, and garlands of fruit and flowers adorning their bases. They are a tribute to the Italian Renaissance, cast in bronze to convey a lasting sense of strength, abundance, and stability at the very heart of America. Together, the Piccirilli Brothers' lions and Menconi's flagpoles embody the living spirit of a shared heritage—a lasting bond between the extraordinary craftsmanship of Italian artisans and the bold ambition of the city that never sleeps.
