The American story of this master officially begins on October 9, 1998, when his most imposing creation, the Sail of Columbus, finds a home in Liberty State Park, New Jersey, in the very plaza that took the name Christopher Columbus Plaza to honor Italy's gift. The project was born years earlier, in 1989, when Giannetti won a national competition to embellish the Genoa airport terminal, but that slender shape was destined to travel far.
